Where to head during January when visiting Latin America or South East Asia

January trends for Latin America

Mexico’s a refuge for those from north of the Rio Grande to escape their harsh winter and it can be for you also as Mexico City is around 20°C and Cancún in the upper 20’s, so if you’re a beach comber it’s perfect.

Oaxaca is perhaps cooler at this time of year than usual for the colourful hikes with the locals being the absolute best aspect of the area, think Yalitza Aparicio from the film “Roma”.

Colombia sits just north of the equator and Bogotá reflects the constant weather hovering in the low 20’s, essentially an English climate! Around Barranquilla and Cartagena is essentially the Caribbean and like the rest of the area, it’s tropical and ripe for visits to the Cuidad Perdida near to Cartagena not to mention that city’s magnificent old town.

Medellín is balmy all year round and in this liberal city is great value to visit, forget Pablo “E”, the city’s reinvented itself as a gastronomic outpost as well as a socially progressive beacon to the region.

Pasto in Nariño province near the Pacific holds a “Blacks and White” festival celebrating the colonial past and begins on the 2nd day of January lasting the week

Argentina is always the perfect place to visit, in January Buenos Aires bathes in high summer with people living al fresco, restaurants with steaks, tango outdoors and a relaxed ambience day and night.

Patagonia’s ripe for trekking with its summer encouraging rare flowers, and a mild climate conducive for outdoor frolicking in its interior and highlands.

Bolivia’s wet season corresponds to our winter but is warmer at that time, again here is an English climate temperature wise but elevated 4 thousand metres up!

The Achocalla Festival is La Paz’s agricultural festival and an excuse for dancing, parades and music. It occurs during the 1st week of January

Brazil’s Salvador hosts the Festo do Bonfim where you tie a ribbon around your wrist for good luck afterwards. Fantastic, historical city and region with the best all night party going.

Ecuador’s climate means that the time of year is more important than any climatic changes going on with January marking the low season with less people around and access to the various highland cultural treasures, be aware that Quito is usually cooler than many places being over 3 thousand metres up.

January trends for South East Asia

Bangkok, one of our favourite cities is balmy all year but with less rainfall during January so you won’t be experiencing the puddles whilst enjoying the outdoor markets either in town or along the Chao Priya river while wandering the outdoor markets. Phuket and Koh Samui are at this time both spared downpours also.

Hanoi is temperate at this time of year if you don’t like heat and weather-wise becomes very British with cool days, Ho Chi Minh City continues its tropical way but with less humidity, again in this off season you’ll have attractions, eateries and rides to yourself.

Philippines, this is probably the best time to visit the is country as rainfall is minimal without the threat of typhoons. Negros, Bohol and Luzon are at their best at this time.

Cambodia is also at its meteorological best at this time of year as rain is also minimal and so therefore offering the Tonle Sap river/lake and Angkor without slip sliding, where cycling is easier too.
